Style, Translationese And Ready-made Language--A Stylistic Comparison Between Pride And Prejudice And Its Chinese Translation

The present thesis is another attempt to study literary translation in the dimension of style. With the method of analysis provided by literary stylistics which combines literary intuition with precise linguistic description, the study is confined to a stylistic analysis of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and its Chinese translation by Wang Keyi, seeking to examine what the translator accomplishes at the level of style. Based on the stylistic comparison, an assumption is formulated that translationese and ready-made language are two major problems to be solved if the translator intends to represent the author's style or construct his own style. Conclusions are reached that stylistic analysis does help to improve literary translation and translationese and ready-made language should be avoided for the sake of the author's style and the translator's own style.
