Dr. Nida's theory of functional equivalence has been highly valued and has influenced the practice of translation in general. The primary purpose of this paper is an attempt to explore the theoretical basis of Nida's functional equivalence theory and provide practical help to translators in translating English healthcare management texts. As different from other equivalence theory, Nida's functional equivalence distinguishes itself by shifting its focus of attention to the relationship between text and reader, and by regarding reader's response as the criterion of translation. The transmission of advanced western management to Chinese hospitals will produce a great impact on Chinese people. Many translators have made great contributions in this field. But as far as the author of this paper can see, our translation work still leaves much to be desired. The study of these underlying difficulties becomes quite necessary and important. Based on this recognition, this paper, as a tentative study of effective methods for EHMT translation on the basis of the functional equivalence theory, is expected to be conductive to the translation work as a whole. In this paper, chapter 1 introduces Nida's functional equivalence theory and its great contributions and impact on translation studies, and compares it with other translation theories both in China and in the west. Chapter 2 analyzes healthcare management texts both in terms of its content, style and function etc. Chapter 3 points out that EHMT translation is a kind of cross-cultural translation and discusses the influences of cultural differences on the translation difficulties. Afterwards, in the main part, the paper deals with how functional equivalence theory is applied in English healthcare management texts translation practice by citing various examples. Principles and different strategies are used to seek the closest natural equivalence.Functional equivalence theory proves to be very instructive and effective in EHMT translation. However, it is through the EHMT translation practice that thelimitations of this theory are revealed. It needs further development and enrichment to provide guidance for translation practice.
