Sorrowful Implication Of Women's Poetries In The Song Dynasty

The poetries reached a height of maturity and prosperity in the Song dynasty. During the period there was a team of composers——women poets, which was weak but could not be ignored at all. In 《The whole poetry of the Song Dynasty》,less than three hundred poetries, which were written by over ninety women poets, were of distinctive enchantment and got a great deal of achievements as well. Based upon the poets' different identities, positions, experience and disposition, there was a wide diversity on their works' backgrounds, contents, styles and features, but most of their works had one thing in common, the sorrowful implication was implied in them. This thesis was divided into four parts, it attempted to approach the origin of the implication, classification, form of expressions and the values. Women in the Song dynasty lived in an impoverished and weak ages, in which the country in grip of crisis was deeply involved into feudal ethics. At that time, women couldn't appeal for protection from their marriages and families, they were fettered by the thoughts of the idealist philosophy, and the poetry of the Song Dynasty has aesthetic prevailing custom taking sorrow as beauty. Therefore, it seemed inevitable that sorrowful implication of women poetries came into being in the dynasty. Although some of these works filled with joy, the sorrow played a principal part in their spiritual lives. According to the level of sorrow, the works could be separated into three types——grieve, sad and misery. To demonstrate the sorrowful implication incisively and vividly, the women poets chose a large number of imaginary views containing sorrowful colors, depicted many women's imagines, such as missing women, resentful women and women in the troubled times and so on, used large quantities of sorrowful words and tones, so the implication was expressed thoroughly. The implication which appeared frequently in the women poetries of Song dynasty was not only different from the true beauty of the works men poets wrote by imitating women ones' tone, but also the fruit of deep feelings of women from all ranks. These works conformed to the distinguishing features of the Chinese traditional literature and sexual characteristics, and could make people experience the personality distillation of women and their lofty spirits of that time. The sorrowful implication which was contained in women poetries of the Song dynasty recorded women's living conditions, social positions, thoughts and feelings in that time. So, the sorrowful implication was of social significance and great value of art.
