Du Fu's poetry was said annotated by thousands of Song people. This is an impressive glory in the history of Chinese classical literary interpretation. However, the study on this glory is inadequate and fragmentary at present. Based on the previous study, the paper elaborates Zhao Ci-gong's The Sequence and Annotation of Du Fu 's Poetry which is the earliest edition of Du Fu's poetry annotated. It mainly includes four parts.Part one, study on the author and the edition. This part is a survey of Zhao Ci-gong's resume, and the course of the composing, publishing and circulating of Zhao's works. The paper corrects many mistakes lied in previous research on Zhao Ci-gong's resume and Zhao's primary reference book. The paper also sketches out the circulating map of Zhao's works and indicates why the book had disappeared for a long time and why it appeared again.Part two, study on the content and characteristics of Zhao's works. The subject will be analyzed from following several aspects: the collecting, the arranging, the collating and the annotating of Du Fu's poetry; refuting the forged annotation and correcting the wrong remarks. Based on the analysis of the historical background, the studying style and the viewpoint on Du Fu in Song dynasty, the thesis summarizes the characteristic and indicates the progress of Zhao's annotation.Part three, study on annotation methods. Through an overall research, and referring to foreign theories, the thesis tries to build a new frame of Chinese classical literary interpretation. Under this frame, there are four main methods in Zhao's annotation: critical exegeses of words and phase, combination of literary and historical annotation, clarification of viewpoint, and analyses of art of composition. Zhao's works is compared with other explanations of Du Fu's poetry and Li Shan's The Explanation of Literary Selections etc. to illustrate its annotation methods and its creative achievement.Part four: values, position and effects of The Sequence and Annotation of Du Fu's Poetry. The thesis expounds the subject's important values in literature and poetry interpretation, determines its high position in Chinese classical literary interpretation, and reveals its effects on heirs and contribution to today's learning. Meanwhile, its defects are pointed out briefly.
