Introductionin recent years, studies have shown that the status of the police's mental health is lower than that of the general crowd. But life affairs, social support, coping style, personality characters and symptoms performance have positive or negative correlation with the police's mental health. The police is a kind of occupation with the higher arousing Their occupational role with a special risk and nervous status makes them always feel that they are surrounded by hostile power. They are the community standing alone and far from the social community. Loneliness is a subjective mental feeling of the individuals, which is a kind of badly emotional experience. Long - term or serious loneliness can lower the level of menial health This research used the loneliness scale to investigate the status of the police's loneliness and further study the relationship between the status of mental health, coping style, social support and the index of loneliness. It could provide theoretical basis for increasing the level of the police's mental health and the counseling work.ObjectiveTo study the relationship between police's loneliness and mental health, coping style, social support , etc.Subjects and MethodsThe policemen of some downtown poiice branch office, excluding the ones with severely chronic diseases or internal organs and somatization diseases, were the experimental group (men 821, women 63), The teachers of the education bureau in the same area were the control group.The UCLA, SCL - 90, TCSQ and PSSS were adopted as the measurement tool to investigate the subjects. According to the different age, educational degree , work department, and marital status, the results were analyzed by t test, one - way ANOVA and stepwise regression.Results1. The loneliness status1. 1 The loneliness difference was found in different kinds of the police, the mean score of the police substation's policemen was obviously higher than that of the officer.1.2 The loneliness difference was found in different age groups, the mean score of loneliness of the policemen aged 50 -59 was obviously lower than that of other age groups.1. 3 There were no differences of the mean score of the police's loneliness among different sex, police age, job, educational background and marital status.1.4 The loneliness score of the police had no difference compared to that of the teachers.2. The factors related to loneliness2.1 The kind of the police was the important factor affecting the police's loneliness.2. 2 The loneliness of the police was in positive correlations with the positive coping style and social supports and in negative correlation with the negative coping style.2. 3 The loneliness of the police was in positive correlations with interpersonal sensitivity, paranoid ideation, depression factors in SCL-90 and in negative correlation with the score of hostility and psychoticism factors.DiscussionThe police were the community with a special risk and nervous status for a long time, which could affect their body and mental health in different degrees. In our study, the loneliness score of the police had no difference compared to that of the teachers. The reason may be the teachers were also a community with bigger psychological stress and higher loneliness degree. Compared to the mean scores of loneliness reported by Liu Zhirong and Liu Jiayan , the police's loneliness in our study was obviously higher than the olds widely thought to be with high loneliness degree by the society and had no difference with college students concerned by the society. Therefore, the status of the police's loneliness was not of the optimism.Many factors' scores in SCL -90 oi the police were higher than those of the teachers, other factors' scores except photic anxiety factor were obviously higher than Chinese general people. These results suggested that the police's mental health problem were more serious. The statistical analyses had shown that the loneliness of the police was in positive correlations with interpersonal sensitivity, paranoid ideation, depression factors in SCL - 90 and in negative correlation with hostility and psychoticism factors We could say the loneliness and mental health may interact with each, other on a certain degree.This research results also proved that positive coping style and good social support system could help to reduce loneliness and improve the level of the police's mental health. The results might provide theoretical basis for further research on the police's mental health and at the same time had an important leading meaning of enhancing the education of mental health on the police and adopting the effective interfering means.
