In a wider sense, International Communication (hereinafter referred to as "IC") in China refers to any effort to publicize China to the outside world, including almost all the information of this country, such as social affairs, economy, culture, tourism, sports, education and so on. For more than 20 years' progress of the reform and opening-up policy, IC in China has gained splendid achievements and contributed a lot to improving the national image, creating a favorable international environment for the nation's modernization, as well as promoting the understanding between nations.Receivers of Chinese IC are mainly foreigners, among whom are largely the English-speaking receivers. Thus, C-E translation is a major concern in IC, which exerts a direct influence on the communicative effect. However, due to obvious obscurities and deficiencies in target texts, we are not satisfied with the current C-E translation in IC. It is a pity that the majority of translation studies center on literary translation, and fail to offer the applicable guidelines to meet the demand of C-E translation in IC. This thesis is designed to study this field and explore the translation principles concerned. Starting with a brief introduction to Chinese IC, and its corresponding translation activities, the thesis classifies the existing problems, analyzes the translation and communication theories involved and proposes three guiding principles for the IC translation.This thesis consists of four chapters besides introduction and conclusion.Introduction briefly outlines the theme and the basic structure of this thesis.Chapter 1 introduces the concept, origin and development of Chinese ICand its C-E translation. By the study of text-types and the classification of source texts, the author points out that C-E translation in IC belongs to the non-literary translation, which has to be content-centered and reader-oriented.Chapter 2 categorizes problems in IC translation, namely, misunderstanding and mistranslation, cultural neglect, Chinglish and the problem of the source text.Chapter 3 focuses on such theories as faithfulness, functional concept of translation, theory of communication, and stylistic theory for IC translation. By doing so, the author expects to lay a theoretical ground for the further discussion.On the basis of the above three chapters, Chapter 4 proposes applicable principles of C-E translation for IC, which include accuracy, reader-orientedness and communicative style. Examples are carefully selected and analyzed to prove the feasibility and practicality of these principles.Conclusion is the review and summary of the whole thesis. For the specific demand of the IC translation, appropriate principles should be adopted to achieve communicative purpose that "making the whole world know well about China".
