This paper is targeted at establishing an interactive bridge among language, information and thought by a systematical analysis of a type of practical writing style of English—Journalistic English (JE). The significance of this paper lies in the fact that the higher education across the world is incessantly in pursuit of transiting freshmen and sophomores' thinking pattern while endowing them with new knowledge in the textbooks. Based on this fact, this paper is expected to demonstrate that college students' thinking pattern can possibly be upgraded gradually into a multidimensional one with the indirect help of abundant reading of Journalistic English outside class. It is psychologically held that college students' age bracket determines that their thinking pattern is experiencing an important transition. Former abstract and convergent thinking pattern is evolving toward a dialectical and divergent one. It is also psychologically concluded that the effective education can realize the transition. Based upon this point of view, this thesis is aiming at discussing whether JE, a style of practical written language, can be viewed as one of such effective education. This thesis differentiates the traditionally stylistic analysis of JE, comprehensively investigating the following valuable properties involved in this special journalese:1. Being reliant upon the "context of culture", the "background meaning" of JE words encompasses latent research significance;2. By virtue of the special organization of the "data units" that upholds a whole article, western journalists intelligently realize the writer-to-reader transfer of the "schemas", indirectly transfusing their multidimensional thought and overall analytical skill into readers' mind. This forms the focal point of the research of this paper;3. Teacher's roles in assisting student's out-of-class reading of the JE articles should not be solely confined to the articles. How to adopt the JE-like thinking style in class to accelerate students' thinking upgrade embraces great value for the English teachers in Chinese colleges. The aforementioned three aspects form an integrated framework of this paper and are analyzed respectively. The theories cited in this paper cover a wide range, taking into account semiotics, semantics, stylistics, journalism, philosophy, educational and cognitive psychology, etc. Among these theories the most dominant one is the "schema theory" in cognitive psychology. In short, this paper shows how the Western journalists transfer their multidimensional thinking pattern to their readers by means of intelligently-organized data units that consist of schemas.
