Chinese characters are one of the extant oldest characters in the world; its development course is extremely complicated. There are seven kinds of different scripts in the history of China. The change course of those scripts went through from simple to complicated and from complicated to simple. There are important realistic meanings of studying the characters of China, especially the simplified Chinese characters and the original complex forms of simplified Chinese characters.The scripts of Chinese characters include two major systems: the system of traditional Chinese and simplified one. The original complex forms of simplified Chinese characters are one of the symbols of the times; there are long historical styles. However, with the changes of the times, the convenient, simple and easy simplified Chinese characters are rooted in the hearts of people. In the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells and inscription on ancient bronze objects, Chinese characters have simplified forms. When they developed into the lesser seal character period, a lot of words have already been simplified. Lishu is the greatest script reform in the history of Chinese characters. It is obvious that characters must pass through from complicated to simple. This course is inevitable.China pays much attention to reform of writing systems and characters planning in recent years, which have a very important meaning to improvement of social development, scientific and technological progress, culture and education level. However, language standardization has met the great challenge at present that is the original complex forms of simplified Chinese characters reappear in a large amount. This thesis has used the relevant theories of sociolinguistics, including accommodation theory, speech community, social variant, language choice. The writer studies and analyzes the phenomenon that the coexistence of the simplified Chinese characters and the traditional Chinese characters in order to improve the consciousness of using the characters of the social norm. On the basis of observing the rule of characters development, combining the external pressure strength of government's behavior and societies ethical standardizing function inherently, then creating a normal and unified Chinese language environment.So, this thesis regards accommodation theory, language choosing and speech community as the foundation. The writer researches and analyzes the coexist phenomenon of the simplified Chinese characters and traditional Chinese characters, and provides the corresponding solutions. The research includes four major parts:The first part has introduced the language, characters of China and state of using of the Chinese characters at present. The Chinese characters have a history of more than 3,000 years at least from inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells. There are seven different kinds of scripts at that time, including the inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells, inscription on ancient bronze objects, the lesser seal character, Lishu, Cursive script, Regular script and Running hand. The development rule of the script is fromcomplex to simple. At present, two major writing systems coexist in different areas of China.In the second part, the writer analyzes the reasons of characters' change and development from social cultural factor, politics and laws factor, economic development factor and psychological factor. Language and characters are social, which cannot be cut apart with the society; they are also closely bound up with such different fields as the politics, economy, law, etc.The third part has recommended the reforms of writing systems and language planning. It introduces the reason, purpose, direction, task and meaning of reforms of writing systems.
