"May 4th" movement is a very important period in Chinese history, not only due to the political reason, but also due to the transition of ideology, literature and language. Chinese poetry has very long traditional history. The vernacular poetry in May 4th Literature Revolution changed the track of the development of Chinese poetry. The success of vernacular poetry is related to the poem tradition, the literary background in May 4th and the foreign poetry. However, by the meaning of "foreign poetry", most of the researches neglected one fact that the foreign literature was imported into China by the translation. The foreign poetry was not the exact original one.The poetry translation in May 4th literature revolution has intimate relation with the writing of new poems and includes numerous translation phenomenon: the selection of source poetry, the selection of source poets, what translation strategy the translator adopted, what kind of changes occurred between the original poem and the translated one, etc. The collection and description of these phenomena is not enough. We should analyze these phenomena and give out proper explanation. In order to achieve this aim, this essay will try to focus on two lines: one is the influence of Chinese translation of English poetry on the new poetry movement which will give out more description and analysis on the micro-phenomenon; while the other is about the characters and properties of translation during literature revolution which is more of theoretical concern. Chapter One is the general introduction about the present research in this area and the innovation of this essay. Chapter Two is the whole collection of the translated English poetry in first ten years in May 4th movement and the general analysis of the trend. Chapter Three to Chapter Five will cover three different aspects of the influence of translated poems: the language, the style and the rhymes and cadence, and meanwhile, inter-text theories, manipulation theories and the theories of the possibilities of poem translation will be applied to explain the influence of translation in literature revolution.
