Poem, calligraphy and drawing play an important role in the life of ancient literators of China. Special cultural environment leads to the unique phenomenon of Chinese culture, of which the culture of ci lyric in paintings is. The research on the literature of ci lyric in paintings has been one of the literature researches where Shi lyric in paintings is studied relatively deep and various peotry anthologies and appreciation books emerge endlessly. According to the material on hand, the research on ci lyric in paintings lags behind. The thesis attempts to specialize in the development and characteristics of ci lyric in paintings of Song Dynasty.The exordium briefly introduces the status in quo of the research on ci lyric in paintings and the anticipated breakthrough of the thesis. The signification of ci lyric in paintings is defined and the birth of it is discussed in chapter one. They not only comprise the ci poetry in the calligraphies and paintings but also the praising words on the fans and folding screens. ci lyric in paintings develop from the paintings according to the ci lyric to ci lyric according to the paintings. Its development is influenced by the notion of literators to ci lyric style. It was Li Yu of Southern Tang Dynasty that initiated the ci lyric in paintings.The second chapter is divided into 4 sections, which focus on the development and characteristics of ci lyric in paintings in Song Dynasty. The first section is about its development and its reason in Song Dynasty in which there are over 120 ci lyrics. It experienced a process of production, development and maturity during late Tang Dynasty, Five Dynasties to Song Dynasty. Its development in Song Dynasty owes great to the culture at that time and its own development and the social political environment are also responsible for it. And other factors are also involved in its development which include the notion of 'the integration of poem and painting' among the literators in Song Dynasty; the literature of ci lyric in paintings of Song dynasty, particularly the development of shi lyric in paintings. Ci is more elegant which can be used to express sentiment. Because of the declining country and people's failure in finding ways to contribute to the country, ci lyric plays the role of expressing sentiment and reposing one's depression so as to display the signification of paintings. In the late Southern Song Dynasty, being influenced by the ci lyric on praising things, they are mainly on the bird-and-flower paintings for the sake of expressing sentiment. The second section is about the three stages of its diachronic development: preliminary development, further development and maturity. The third section specializes in its various synchronic characteristics. The fourth section is about the case study on Wu Wenying and Zhang Yan in the late Southern Song Dynasty.The third chapter recommends the differences and similarities between ci lyric and shi lyric. Their relationship is like an intersectant circle with their differences in the style and their similarities in the words in paintings. Ci lyric in paintings coexists with other ci lyric literature styles in the expressing way and the content.The thesis concludes, based on the above mentioned, that ci lyric's expressing and graceful characteristic is brought into full play by Su Shi literators group and the work of the Elegant critics of ci in Southern Song Dynasty.
