In the narrow sense, university Chinese is the traditional one. In the broad sense, it refers to a series of quality educational curriculums in all university which aim at elevating language ability and fostering humane spirit of students in many fields such as humanities (except Chinese language and literature), science, technology, agriculture, medicine, finance and economics, politics and law, foreign language, art, education and so on through language training and literature appreciation. The research object of this thesis is the broadly-defined university Chinese. The Chinese curriculum reform of basic education has raised new requests and challenges for university Chinese curriculums. The contemporary university students lack humane spirit, but university Chinese has special significance for cultivating their humane spirit. The traditional university has gone from the past refulgence to the present embarrassment, and the solution must be found by reform. These are the background of this research. After a questionnaire study involving 1129 students of 21 universities in Chongqing and reading the related literature, I come to the conclusion: the current university Chinese teaching has some main problems such as the difficulty in offering comprehensive curriculums, the confusion in understanding the nature and goal of curriculums, the chaos in the choice of teaching content, the monotony of teaching methods, the embarrassment in the evaluation of teaching effect, the shortcomings of teaching theory research etc. All these problems mainly result from the improper cohesion between university and high school Chinese teaching.
