On the basis of overviews of previous researches on loneliness, analysis of open-ended measures and individual interviews, this study puts forward its own theoretical hypothesis on loneliness. According to this hypothesis, the study designs a questionnaire on loneliness of college students. By employing this questionnaire and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire for adults, the researcher takes 493 college students as informants. The result suggests that:(1) The self-made questionnaire on loneliness of college students is of sound reliability and validity. Adopting the method of factor analysis, the researcher arrives at four dimensions for loneliness of college students: assessment of communicative competence, loneliness experience, assessment of interpersonal relationship, belief in interpersonal relationship. The results accord well with the theoretical hypothesis.(2) As a whole, loneliness of college students doesn't vary significantly in gender, grade, and subject difference. However, male and female college students differentiate significantly in light of belief in interpersonal relationship.(3) Loneliness is significantly correlated with personality traits. Loneliness bears a significantly positive correlation with neurosis and psychosis, and a negative correlation with extroversion. The result is consistent with previous findings.
