This research, for the sake of revising or editing the SEI Inventory which will be in accordance with the peculiarities of the middle school students, deal with the frame of the self-esteem of these students on the foundation of investigating the applicability of SEI. At the same time, this research will be helpful for us to carry out the instructs of mental health and personality during adolescence.This study has made an investigation to the middle school students in three cities of Hunan province, i.e. Yueyang, Changsha and Hengyang. Through the reliability and validity analysis, exploratory and confirmatory analysis, the original SEI is edited as a new one which is composed of 6 factors, including 23 items.The following conclusions may be got through this investigation:(l)The Self-Esteem Inventory(SEI) possesses some applicability to the middle school students of Hunan province. The Chinese SEI is composed of 6 factors, that is, family -self, self-satisfaction, ability-self, emotion-self, socialpeer-self and school-self.(2)There exists distinct grade differences on the self-esteem of the middle school students. As for the students of Grade 2 in junior and Grade 1 in senior high school, their levels ofself-estee, are lower than those in other grades. There, except on ability-self, exists no sexual differences on the self-esteem of these students.
