White Deer Plains stands prominent in the history of the new period (after 1979) literature. Exploration, by way of the analysis of its text, on the super Chinese techniques in novel narration, discussion of the theory of novel narration and study on the achievements and defects of text narration can not only contribute to the carrying forward of the good traditions in novel narration, but also promote the development of the art of narration in present full-length novel.Based on a detailed analysis of its text, the present paper deals with several issues concerned with the narrative characteristics of White Deer Plains, around which issues the theoretical framework of the present thesis is constructed. The text is interpreted in the multi-perspectives of Chinese narratology, western narratology and culture studies, thus the rich meaning planted in it revealed. The thesis, within the framework of narratology, literary psychology, rhetoric and mental analysis, deals with such issues as image narration, narrative structure, body narration in text. Meanwhile, the narrative defects of the lack of integrity in structure, narration gap and the existence of rigged-up plots are referred to and the reasons for the defects are investigated.Chapter One makes an interpretation of the important images in text and of their narrative functions. It is revealed from the research that image is possessed of the functions of constructing discourse, text and the spirit of the text.Chapter Two, from the point of view of novel structure theories, investigates the narrative characteristics and defects of the text. It is pointed out that an implicit structure of the dualistic opposites model is present in the text of White Deer Plains and that the narration gap, which results from the conflict between conceptual tendency and aesthetic rules, and between commercial aims and aesthetic pursuits.Chapter Three studies the various narrative means of body and such complex relations between body and society, revolution, politics, reason, power, desire, physical pleasure, morality.Chapter Four analyzes the narrative discourse of the text. It is held that there is an abundance of free indirect speech in the text, which is a forceful device for the narrators' ingenious participation in narration, for controlling the reader's response and for guiding the reader in their standpoint, since the use of the free indirect speech can offer intimacy.
