My thesis is dedicated to a comprehensive analysis of the compositions as well as functions of dynamic context in the process of utterance interpretation. The thesis consists of four chapters:Chapter One reviews the content of the traditional context including its content and features. In addition, I have given a detailed account of cognitive context in the Theory of Relevance. In the last part of chapter One, I give a theoretical analysis of the comparison between the traditional context and cognitive context in RT.Chapter Two summarizes the functions of context in the process of pragmatic inference: Context is the premise of pragmatic inference; Context is the core variable of pragmatic process. In brief, pragmatic inference is the process of information processing highly depending on context.Chapter Three makes an attempt to present my tentative study of dynamic context. First I admit that context is dynamic and gives the reasons to illustrate this point. Then I try to give an analysis of the compositions and forms of dynamic context. Finally, I explain the functions of dynamic context in the process of utterance interpretation.Chapter Four tries to give an account of both the theoretical significance and practical significance in foreign language teaching and learning of dynamic context. In the last chapter, I draw briefly the conclusions of my research on dynamic context. Moreover, I point out clearly that this paper is just the beginning of the study of dynamic context and I do hope my study can arouse more people's interest and further research on dynamic context.
