Getting hints from the comments of D. H. Lawrence on the characters in his works, moved by the vividness of his language and the depth of his thought, the writer of this paper is to try to detect the theme all through his works and make a clear picture of his exploration after art and investigation into human consciousness.Intensity is a word employed by the writer when making comments on the figures in his work, and it shows ambiguity in different context. Strength and earnestness in the temperament of the characters are revealed by this very word, which may seem very abstract; yet through close reading, readers can see the successful molding of the work and the characters also owes a lot to the mastery of language. The writer is strict with even hard on himself in his verbal usage. Maybe it is this very tribulation, this harshness in the inward pressing on his own heart and soul, which makes the language powerful. The themes of his works stand out indicating different efforts to find a solution for mankind as well as himself in the predicament of modern civilization: the most tragic lies sometimes not outside, but utterly inside. The forces cooperate on the writer's consciousness and originate the long succession of his works. Hence comes the agreement to Lawrence's last conclusion about himself: A Savage Enough Pilgrimage. It is this intensely earnest pursuit into language and life that ensures his attainment to the height both in his creation and his career. The paper is based mainly on New Criticism, but as the springboard is not to support or defy any theories but to make an advantageous use of them for a clear clue to a more thorough understanding of the literary works proper. Sometimes unmeant violation is inevitable, for example, New Criticism insists on single ontological analysis, but the thesis, aiming at the revelation of the deep meaning underlying the works on the whole, intends to get what impresses the writer deeply—expressed.
