Peasant uprising was one of the most severe social problems in the late Qing and the Republic eras of China. Peasant uprisings burgeoned during the ten years before the Revolution of 1911, which were especially prominent in the Province of Zhejiang in terms of frequency and magnitude. The current study examines the issue of peasant uprisings in Zhejiang Province during the ten years before the Revolution of 1911, looking at peasant uprisings'types, characteristics, causes, impacts, as well as government controls over them.It is found that 1) peasant uprisings in Zhejiang Province tend to take more violent forms and usually developed in and around individual villages, whose characteristics vary from village to village; 2) the frequent peasant uprisings were caused together by a series of intertwined factors such as calamities, heavy taxes, reform measures, corrupt officials, as well as collective social psyche; and 3) government controls often received little impact. Peasant uprisings in Zhejiang Province disrupted the social order, hindered the implementation of the Late Qing's reform measures, and eventually boosted the process of the Revolution of 1911 in Zhejiang Province. The social impacts of peasant uprising were thus complicated and multi-dimensional.
