As one of the most influential film directors in Hong Kong for almost 20 years, Ann Hui is the chief representative of Hong Kong's new movie tide as well as the most distinguished female directors in Hong Kong film-making history. She has directed 18 films in her 20-year film-making career and man being, the reality and the historical background is the constant concern of her film, As a reward, she has been granted with the Golden Horse Award in Taiwan and Hong Kong film award and has earned international fame as an excellent female director.Ann Hui's films probe into the relationship between man being and his tragic destiny. This dissertation takes Ann Hui's 13 long films (all her films except those ghost and swordsmen ones) as the research object with destiny consciousness as the starting point. The author tries to discuss Ann Hui's unique perspective in her contemplation of destiny through the analysis of the topics, the narrative strategy and the lens expression of her films and the personal experience of her own as well.This dissertation is divided into 4 parts. First part concerns the political consciousness of destiny. The author discusses Ann Hui's presentation of the entanglement between individual and politics/history by observing the strong political consciousness of her films. Part two concentrates on the vagabondizing consciousness of destiny. The author inquires Ann Hui's understanding of the vagabondizing life through the vagrancy images and the "rootless" and "guest" complex in her films. Part three discusses destiny and conflict through the study of the narrative structure and image connotation of her films. The last part is devoted into the contemplation of destiny and here in this part the author shows Ann Hui' s subversion of the traditional male and female images as manifested by her unconventional presentation of male and female destinies. And this is exactly the true aspect of life.
