Linguistic Features Of English News Leada And Main Stgrategies For Their Translation

As a common intercultural communication activity, translation of news and reports plays an exceptionally important role in transmitting information across the world. As the most important parts of news items, news leads inform readers of the main facts or major information of news events and tell them what to expect. Undoubtedly, it is of great significance to make a study of major linguistic features of English news leads and of the main strategies and approaches for their translation.First, this thesis briefly reviews the history of news translation, overviews previous relevant researches, and highlights the necessity of this research. By referring to previous studies, the author raises her four suggested principles for translation of English news leads (TENL) into Chinese:faithfulness, expressiveness, succinctness, and elegance. Next, the thesis makes a general survey of English news leads in terms of their definition, classification, their writing requirements and their development tendency. Then it discusses and illustrates language features of English news leads at lexical, grammatical, syntactical, and rhetoric levels, as well as the differences between English and Chinese news leads. What follows is an exploration of the three major translation strategies for TENL:literal translation, liberal translation, and flexible translation. Moreover, the author verifies three effective translation techniques, i.e. reconstruction, backgrounding and adjustment of reporting angles. Finally, the thesis makes integrated analyses of the Chinese versions of typical English news leads.In the conclusion, the writer highlights the essential qualities and requirements of a qualified translator of English news leads. It is honestly hoped that this thesis will provide enlightening to news translators and help them do better in news translation.
