During their long history of development ,the art of Chinese calligraphy and traditional painting gained progress through mutual dependence and reference. Many talented artists ,who are adept at both calligraphy and painting, often apply calligraphy techniques to painting or painting theory to calligraphy, which results in numerous peerlessly beautiful paintings and fantastic calligraphy and adds new brilliance to the world of Chinese art.There are not few artistic masters in history. Especially ,the flourishing Ming and Qing dynasty saw continuous emergence of varied schools , styles and celebrated artists. However ,few of their artistic works were able to survive the vicissitudes of times and human society and still keep its vigorous life Bada Shanren was among those leading ones . As Liu Haisu , a master of traditional Chinese painting , once put it: "Over the last 1168 years long period since Wang Wei ,there appeared quite a few highly qualified artistic works ,but few can be compared with Bada's and Shitao's ,which are ever shining in the world of art. "Based on the aesthetics of calligraphy ,this thesis, focusing on the theory of combination of brushwork and calligraphy ,tries to explore thebeauty of handwriting in Bada Shanren's traditional Chinese panting in its five chapters.Chapter I probes into the co-existence and mutual prosperity of calligraphy and painting ,with regard to the process of their integration and practical application.Chapter II expounds the artistic conception of calligraphy through interpreting Bada's works in terms of the beauty of distortion, the beauty of wateriness, the beauty of coldness, the beauty of flavor, the beauty of line, the beauty of blankness, and so on.Chapter III deals with the inspiration of Bada's arts and sum up the artistic style and sprit of Bada Shanren's.The concluding part surveys the whole essay and furthers its understanding of the artistic conception of Bada's paintings .It goes on to confirm the practical significance of Bada Shanren's theory of integrating calligraphy and painting .
