In the 80 ages of 20 centuries, the New Historicism was produced with literature and culture in England and United States', it had been already early to be seen the clues with the Renaissance literature criticism, which formed gradually in postmodernism's context, differs from the old Historicism and formalism criticism. For the present, the researchers concentrate on the translations, introductions and inquiries of some relevant phenomena of New Historicism, and some studies are no profound researches of some core problems. This thesis proposes to verify the position of New Historism in research objects, research methods and the practices of literary criticism, and obtain the comprehension and sublimation, and the applications of the New Historicism in China, and make a thinking and suggestions about the new period literature of our country.Chapter 1: the scholarship background and theory resources of the New Historicism produced. Firstly I thinks that the produce of the historicism aim at rectifying a scholarship deviation towards the narrow and limitid text study of the new criticism. That the formalism theories go to the extreme causes the new Historicism to produce in the Renaissance literature studies sphere. Secondly I think it's direct theory source is complicated.Chapter 2: theoretical characteristics of The NeW Historicism. This chapter concerned two aspects: the relationship between literature and history;and that between literature and politics. The "New" Historicism, which pertained to the area of literature criticism, is defined in contrast with the "Old" one: the latter considers the literature text as true and concrete reflect of the history, while the former sees the textual attribute of history and its virtual elements, and thus confines the reality of the historical language within the construct of conceptions to some extent. The historical values of the New Historicism determine that the literature criticism is also a political one with cultural criticizing. The criticism however, is intended to query the principles underpinning the social system, rather than to overturn the existing system.Chapter 3: the critical strategies and methods for the New Historicism. Firstly, the critical strategies and methods can be regarded as one kind of "cultural The Poetics ofCultural", which stresses the reconstruction of historical-cultural context and the mutual shaping between the literature and its context. Secondly, the politicalization of the Historicism does not mean to subvert the extant social system in the realistic world, but queries towards politics and thought on which the society system depends in culture and idea realm, and then sets forth the antagonistic culture politics and fictitious history discourse, reveals its complexity in the process of ideology containment, makes the New History value judgment of its own on ideology and social culture.Chapter 4: the applications of the New Historicism in China. The applications of the New Historicism are much less than its theoretical analyses ever since it has been introduced into China late 1980s. The applications focused on two perspectives: the composition and critique of non-popular historical novels ever since the new era;the rise of the movement "rewriting the literature history". By reviewing and studying the above perspectives, this chapter analyzed success and failure of the western neo-historicism in our country, and pointed out our misunderstandings of the theory.Chapter 5: the paradox of the New Historicism: traditional breakthrough and theoretical dilemma. Scrutinized the theory combining both theoretical and practical viewpoints, we can clearly see diverse theoretical dilemmas during its applications. This chapter evaluated the entire value orientation and social effects of the theory by analyzing the paradox it faced.Epilogue: endless sound. This final chapter summarized the theoretical value of the New Historicism and its meaning to the composition and critique of literature in our country, and envisioned the scenarios of dialogues among themes like poetics and politics, culture and individual, the ancient and the contemporary era in the arena of history.
