A Study On Way Object In Modern Chinese

The object has always been an important issue in grammar research in Modern Chinese, with a lot of studies devoted to it. However, the studies focusing on the subcategory, especially the way object are relatively few. The so-called "the way object" refers to the object denoting the way of action. It is a subcategory of object divided fromthe semantic perspective. Its characteristic in form is that by using "按....(的方式)",the object can be put in front of the verb.The article sets out to examine examples from "Verb Usage Dictionary" [Arrange 1987 by Meng Cong (孟琮), etc.] and examples the researcher collected and recognized as "the way object". At the same time, the researcher carries on the analysis, the description and the explanation with the relevant sample sentences of the sample sentences collected by searching "CCL corpus" (Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU).Three planes grammar theories are employed in the analysis and discussion of the relation between the verb and the way object in terms of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The way object can be enumerable and has the certain characteristic of idiom.The thesis consists of seven parts:One: IntroductionThis part mainly introduces the cause and the background of the present study. Also included in this part are the introduction of the theoretical methods employed and the explanation of the research data.Two: The defining of "the way object"Based on the precious definitions of the way object, the present study holds that anyobject which can be put in front of verb by using the structure "按.....(的方式)" is theway object. There is also a comparison between way object, result object and tool object.Three: The analysis of the way object structureAs far as verb is concerned, the verb, which is followed by way object, has the characteristics of continuity, independence and controllability and should be monosyllabic. As far as noun is concerned, the noun serves as the way object should be disyllabic or polysyllabic, the structure which can be classified into the fluctuation type and the non- fluctuation type.Four: The characteristic of idioms of way objectThere are only a few way objects and they have the characteristics of idioms. They can not be expanded and analogized freely. At the same time, we may also prove its characteristics of idiom through phrase.Five: The relationships between way adverb and way objectThis part makes a description of way adverb, and asserts that unmarked way adverb can not be transformed into way object and that marked way adverb can be transformed into way object under certain conditions.Six: The analysis of way object from the perspectives of pragmatic and cognitionThe way case belongs to the periphery case, which usually serves as the adverb after propositions such as "J￡", "ffl" . We believe that the way case serves as the object is the cause of the principle of economy and focus. The way object is explained from the perspective of cognition.Seven: Words leftThis part makes a summary of the study and expounds the significance of the research. It also points out the limitations of the study and makes some suggestions on the further directions of research.
