An ultimate goal in education is to promote learner to learn how to learn. The past three decades has seen an upsurge of intensive interest in the effective ways in which learners approach language learning at home and abroad. Language learning strategy is the key to learners' success. Cognitive strategy is one of the language learning strategies. Cognitive strategy training to students is one of the aims of English teachers. The present thesis is an experimental report on a study of the feasibility of cognitive strategy training for English students of vocational colleges in Chinese settings. Cognitive strategy is very important for English learners. Vocational college English students share similarities to other English learners, but they have their own characteristics due to differences in syllabus, objective and environment. To know their characteristics scientifically, to teach them how to learn with some effective cognitive strategies to improve these students' English. The study is significant in that it represents the student-centered notion in education and aims at developing learner autonomy. The main purposes of the study are to investigate how frequently the students use cognitive strategies and then to train them in some cognitive strategies to see if their proficiency of English will be improved by training. The study is designed as a quasi-experiment, taking two intact classes of the freshmen in a vocational college as the subjects, an experimental class and a comparison class. The training includes cognitive strategy awareness and some concrete strategies, and it lasted a term. The main approach in the training is combining cognitive awareness with cognitive strategies, and combining separated training with integrated training. The results suggested the students who received training in cognitive strategies outperformed those who haven't been received. The study proved that training students in cognitive strategies does improve English learning. It also showed the approach of combining cognitive awareness with some concrete cognitive strategies and combining separated training with integrated training was feasible. The thesis consists of six parts: 1. introduction, 2. literature review, 3. theoretical framework, 4. design methods, 5.findings and discussions, 6. conclusion.
