| Noun-Predicate sentences are one of the very common sentence patterns in the Chinese language and reflect the characteristics in the language at a full length though its proportion is quite limited. On the basis of the accomplished researches, this paper, from the perspectives of syntax, semantics and grammarization, makes a comprehensive probe into noun-predicate sentences. The paper consists of five parts: the introduction, syntactical analysis of noun-predicate sentences, semantic analysis of noun-predicate sentences, analysis of grammarization of noun-predicate sentences and the conclusion.Introduction: A literature review of the related research accomplishments is given in the first place and then it points out the remaining problems, this paper's research scope and the problems to be solved in this paper.Part 1 This chapter gives an analysis on the syntax of noun-predicate sentences with the focus on the interactive choosing between their subjects and predicates. In addition, it lists as exhaustively as possible the syntactical combinations that might appear and reveals comprehensively syntactical features of noun-predicate sentences.Part 2 A semantic analysis of noun-predicate sentences is made in this chapter. In accordance with semantic characteristics, noun-predicate sentences are classified into both static and dynamic forms. The analysis results in the characteristics of syntactical patterns with different semantic meanings, which paves the way for further analysis in the next chapter.Part 3 This chapter gives a thorough analysis as to the reasons why nouns can function as predicates and it argues it is grammarization that causes the fact that nouns can function as predicates. Conclusion: It concludes the main ideas discussed in this paper and points out problems for further research in this area. |
