Wuthering Heights, Emily's only novel, was published in December of1847 under the pen name of Ellis Bell. The complex revenge whichimpenetrate the novel impresses me deeply. In the paper, I try to analyze therevenge of dramatis personae and also the roots of the tragic and wildrevenge。In the first chapter, I make a general introduction about Emily Bont?,including her life history, her hometown: Haworth and her personality. Inchapter two, I describe and analyze the complex revenge in the novel.Although in the end of the story, Heathcliff abandoned his plan for revenge, the tragedy caused by it would never be neglected. The revenge and theconsequent tragedy are not an accident. There are some roots. So in the thirdchapter, I analyze the deep roots of revenge in three aspects. In the lastchapter, I made a conclusion: As the most profound theme of the novel, revenge did not exist alone, neither was it something happened accidentally insome people. It had its social and individual reasons. By analyzing thesereasons and roots, we can reveal the hierachical system in England at thattime and the tragedy that was caused by the darkside of the human nature.Because of her larruping experience, Emily created the masterpieceWuthering Heights which is both romantic and ghastful;peaceful andpassionate;despairing and promising.
