The modern transformation of Chinese literature is a inevitable trend under certain joint historical forces. Viewed from the current academic research, these joint forces are mainly embodied in three aspects, namely the influence of the thought of the Western literature, the need of domestic social transformation and the demand of the development of the literature. Based on the study of others, the thesis expounds the great significance of folk culture in the modernization of Chinese literature. Except the introduction, the thesis is composed of four parts.I. The rediscovering of folk cultural resources around the May 4th Movement of 1919. On the eve of the May 4th Movement, accompanied by the voice of going to the uneducated populace, a modern movement of folklore was spread to the whole country rapidly from Beijing University. The movement goes through two stages, finding out a lively popular tradition beyond the classical tradition monopolized by the intellectuals.II. Folk culture and the modern transformation of Chinese literary concept. Chinese modern movement of folklore accompanied by the May 4th Movement changed people's prejudice against the folk culture and the folk literature, repudiating traditional literary concept, and caused Chinese modern literature to repudiate the literary concept of the Confucian school.III. Folk culture and the modern transformation of Chinese literary spirit. The spiritual trait of the folk culture embodies in both rebellious spirit and folk spirit, which aroused the modern spirit of Chinese literature such as negative spirit and folk spirit.IV. Folk culture and the modern transformation of Chinese literary form. The linguistic folklore rooted in Chinese traditional culture played an important role in the modern transformation of Chinese literary form .
