The Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang are a great heritage of all mankind left by Chinese ancient artists, which builds a magnanimous art history as long as a thousand years from Northern Liang to Yuan Dynasty. This article picks murals of Northern Wei as a case of research, with an attempt to give them an all-round and systematic study and analysis on such basic painting elements as composition, modeling, lines and color, etc. so as to generalize the unique aesthetic style of Northern Wei murals, which features boldness, freedom, solemnness and sadness. The profound historical background, specific geographical position and humanistic conditions, which contribute to the formation of this unique style, are also given a detailed analysis. Finally a conclusion is drawn from the process in which murals of Northern Wei was formed and developed, that is, the spiritual connotation of national traditional art needs to be paid a deeper thought; take a sound attitude to handle the problems brought by contemporary blending of western and eastern culture and have a better understanding of its guiding significance for new creation and development of contemporary painting of China.
