A series of states sought for main power during the spring and autumn period, and seven powerful states competed with each other to conquer the whole nation during the warring states period. However, the Qin state became stronger and stronger, conquered the rest six states, unified the whole nation, and established the first united feudal dynasty in Chinese history. Its flexible and practical diplomatic strategy was a critical reason why Qin unified the whole nation at last. On the basis of studying historical materials and learning from former achievements, the author of this article tries to discuss Qin's diplomatic strategy in different stages in terms of philosophy along the main clue of history, compares and analyses the significance of its flexible and practical diplomatic strategy in the historical process of Qin's success and the others'failure. Meanwhile, the author also hopes that Qin's diplomatic strategy, which advanced with time, can be helpful to china's present self-reliant peaceful diplomatic policy. The article can be divided into the following four parts:Part one is the preface. This part states the four main reasons that contributed to Qin's unification of the nation and emphatically points out the importance of its flexible and practical diplomatic strategy.Part two introduces the origin of Qin's diplomatic strategic thoughts. In this part, the author analyses the main schools of diplomatic thoughts during pre-Qin period, compares social conditions of Qin with that of the rest states, and then draws a conclusion that Qin earnestly needed new strategy to catch up with and overrun the other states. In this situation, Qin chose Shangyang's legalist thought of enriching the country and strengthening the stoops, and began to put into practice its flexible and practical strategy.
