On Collusion In Translation During The Late Qing Dynasty And Early Republican Period From The Perspective Of Constructing Cultures

The long-term binary and multiple divisions on translation theories have been argued from the linguistic perspective at home and abroad. The research on translation theories and activities have also stagnated on debates about such divisions. In practice, translators pursue linguistic equivalence in the target language; while in theory, translation researches focus on linguistic problems and textual comparisons. It has proved that the insistence on binary divisions has narrowed the research dimension and fettered the theoretical development. Fortunately, the cultural turn in translation study has not only developed linguistic translation theories and opened up a new realm, but also challenged them by reflecting on traditional theories from the cultural perspective.Since the 1980s, Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett have both advocated to steer translation study to culture. Their advocacy has done away the yoke of the long-term controversy and opened up a freely developing field for translation. In their collaborated book Constructing Cultures― Essays On Literary Translation; they attached great importance to cultural study on translation. Particularly, Bassnett introduces a new notion of"collusion". She asserts that collusion occurs among the translator, the author, and the target-language reader. But it is regretful to acknowledge that the notion leaves much margin in its connotation and denotation. Bassnett puts forward the term of collusion on the broad scene of cultural turn to translation study. It is ambiguous in many aspects, such as with whom, for what, and in which way a collusion occurs, what's its role and value in constructing cultures by means of translation. She left this notion vague in the book and didn't foreground its positive and unique role in constructing culture. Therefore, the notion of collusion deserves a further exploration.Here the author of this thesis is enlightened by the notion of collusion and intends to develop it into a translation approach with its definition, subject and object, forms, influential factors, the role and significance in constructing the target culture. For the research on the approach, the author makes tentative studies about translation theories and activities in the period of late Qing Dynasty and early Replic of China and tries to sieve the so-called collusion in translations of this particular period in order to discover its role and significance in constructing modern Chinese culture.The thesis consists of five chapters and has three key words: collusion, translation...
