The thesis is concentrates on the Xi Kao which is the biggest scripts collection of Beijing Opera.My work examined the major female roles in the forty-one scripts,and explored the female images and gender consciousness.The aim of the thesis is that investigated the social status of female,and development of gender concept in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republican China.There are several objectives of the thesis.First of all,why choose Xi Kao to study?What is the values and status of the Xi Kao in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China?Third,are these female roles can be called the new women in the forty-one scripts?If they can,what are new women?What gender consciousness that can be discovered from these new women?Finally,why these female roles emerged the new characteristics?The chapter one is the introduction of the Xi Kao.First,I introduced the editions of the Xi Kao.Then I depicted the context,structure and editing logic of the Xi Kao.Last but not least,I described the connection between the Xi Kao and the era.I tried to explain the Xi Kao—Women—Female social status and the gender consciousness in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China.The chapter chose two topics from the perspectives of plot pattern.One is women save men.The other is concentrated on the debate of women's chastity and explored the test wife plays and the adultery plays.The chapter three chose the heroines and the lady knights from the perspectives of social status.I tried to investigate the new gender consciousness from these female roles.Besides,I explored the seven Hong Lou plays which is created in the background of drama reformation.I compared the Hong Lou plays with the novel Hong Lou Meng and investigated the difference and development of the gender consciousness.The chapter four connected the change of audience relations in the Beijing Opera in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China,the liberation of women and the scripts in the Xi Kao with the new characteristics of female images,and examined the relationship between the female images and the women in the reality,and the gender concept in the period from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China.
