Both the thought of Humanism and the belief of Christianity have the history of more than 2,000 years. During that long period, both of them are going deeply into ground to influence people's life and produce a huge change in the mankind's thinking and the behavior, particularly after the Renaissance and the Reformation. However, even today, being two important conceptions extremely difficult to conclude and understand, their meanings are still confusing in many places and their relationship is also misunderstood many times. When referring to the relationship between Humanism and Christianity, people in mainland China always make a conclusion that they two cannot co-exist peacefully and are in big conflict. The reason seems logical: Christianity regard God as the highest value while Humanism put human on the top, so they cannot be compatible.S. A. Kierkegaard is a famous and charming thinker in the history. He both is a Chirstian thinker who inherits the tradition of Augustine and humanist. The conception 'individual' is the clue and has the call in Kierkegaard's thinking. Kierkegaard put individual on an important place and make it as the aim of his life and the expectation to the readers of his books.After analyzing the concept individual, this thesis focuses on the meanings of individual in the 'stages on the way of life', then put it both in the history of Humanism and Christianity, making it as a case to discuss the relationship between humanism and Chritianity.In the foreword, after describing the conflict of Humanism and Chritianity, this thesis analyzes the concrete meaning of Humansim according to many kinds of Encyclopedia, then tells the differences of many versions of translation in Chinese, such as 'ren wen zhu yi', 'ren dao zhu yi', 'ren ben zhu yi' and 'ren wen jing shen', which come from the influence of Chinese culture after the concept 'Humanism' reaching China. Then I compare the many important conception in Christianity, such as Christian religion, Christianity and Christian Church.
