On The Translator's Creative Treason In Literary Translation

In traditional translation theories, translation has always been regarded as a non-creative activity and absolute fidelity was its ultra principle. The translator should try his very best to extricate himself from tyranny of subjectivity in order to make the translation completely faithful to the original. With the development of research horizon, studies in some fields such as linguistics prove that any two languages can not realize absolute fidelity. In fact, translation itself is a contradictory domain, in particular literary translation. In literary translation practice, due to influence of both subjective and objective factors, the translator's creative treason has become one of unavoidable essential features.Based on Hermeneutic Philosophy, along with a lot of examples, this thesis focuses on the discussion of reasons and manifestations of the translator's creative treason by putting the translator into the dynamic process. The thesis attempts to point out that it is the translator's creative treason that extends the artistic life of the original work, realizes cultural exchange and exerts an influence on the target culture. However, realization of the translator's creative treason is limited; it is restricted by many factors such as the specific purpose of translation, linguistic, cultural and ideological norms of the original and translation. Therefore, we should have comprehensive, reasonable understanding towards it.
