The ultimate purpose of. language learning is to cultivate one's communicative competence. Accordingly, oral communicative competence is seen as a comprehensive embodying of a language. With China's successful entry into WTO and successful bid for 2008 Olympic Games, the ability of using English in communication is becoming urgent and important. However, the current situation of spoken English teaching is far from satisfactory, which has thus motivated a number of people to launch their related research. The thesis, aimed at researching into the oral communicative competence of students in vocational colleges, provides a fairly detailed further information of the study within seven chapters. Chapter I presents a brief introduction of current situation of spoken English teaching, followed by Chapter II, in which a definition is given and the essence of English teaching is established, that is, communication. In the third chapter, the thesis deals with characteristics of practicality and specialization of oral English textbooks in vocational colleges, guided by the idea that the essence of English teaching is communication. Thereafter, factors affecting the development of students' oral ability are analyzed in Chapter IV. Chapter V then points out that carrying out teaching activities designed to elaborate students' subjectivity is a key means of stimulating students' learning enthusiasm and initiative. Meanwhile, the writer also probes into strategies of oral English teaching and raises personal suggestions on English teaching in vocational colleges. The sixth chapter introduces testing systems based on structuralism and communication, and then puts forward several pieces of advice on possible means of oral English testing in vocational colleges, combined with the current testing methods based on task-based teaching approach. The last chapter, Chapter VII serves as conclusion.
