Analysis Of The Word "Ranhou" From Various Aspects

Via utilizing relevant theories of both traditional linguistics and discourse linguistics, it is analyzing the generalization of the usage of the word "ranhou", investigating the differences of its usage not only in spoken and written language but also in ancient and contemporary times and probing its weakening track and mechanism that this paper elaborates on. This paper consists of five chapters as follows:Chapter One, the exordium, viz. the brief introduction of the research theoretic significance, practical value, research content, survey of predecessors' researches and related corpus. In addition to its use, especially its new use, first embodied in the oral Chinese, the word "ranhou" has been long, widely and frequently used, which poses its semantic weakening and diffusion of its functions. Hence, it's indispensable to analyze the word from various aspects.Chapter Two discusses respectively the defining of the part of speech of "ranhou", its conjunctional function and its relevant sentences in terms of syntax. Since there are slight differences in different dictionaries pertaining to its part-of-speech tagging, it's preferable to view "ranhou" as a multi-category word via analysis—a conjunction and adverb, which allows the word to present such conjunctional power that it can link words, phrases, sentences and even paragraphs. Some uses and positions of "ranhou" being basically fixed in the specific contexts gives rise to the definite syntactic forms and structures.Chapter Three analyzes the semantic relation of "ranhou" in the context from the angle of semantics and pragmatics. This chapter provides an initial analysis of the reason why "ranhou" can connect varieties of semantic relations and inherent consistency of some semantic relations connected by "ranhou", and sequentially, simply analyzes the pragmatic features and functions and understanding of the conjunction, so to speak, the presupposition analysis.
