It is a period of the origin and the development for Chinese lexis from Pre-Qin to the Former and Latter Han Dynasty. During the study on ancient Chinese, Grasping the language status at that time is the first task. The breakthrough on the lexical History which is the weakest part of the history of Chinese, also need to know the language status well during this period. Meanwhile, it will be helpful to know roundly and deeply the lexis at the following time, even nowadays.Undivided attention, Xu Shen studied all the books written before Pre-Qin and explained the classical literature. Later he wrote the exegetical dictionary Shu Wen Jie Zi which referred to the origin of the characters and analysed the glyphs .Anyway it is the first proper dictionary in the history of Chinese characters development and became the sample of the latter lexicology.Mutual Glossing is one of the important explanations and there are so many as 359 groups , referring the 724 characters, 7.74% of the total 9353 characters. Without the era limitation, it fails to disclose the reasons of the lexical discrepancy and concomitancy and that is a defect according to the viewpoint of modern lexicography.
