The study of translation has existed for a long time and formed a mature theoretical system. However, the study of film translation is still at a young period. Film has its own charm that it is not only a medium of entertainment but an effective way of exchanging cultures. With the deepening of China's reform and opening-up and the enhancement of cultural communication to the outside world, more and more foreign films are imported into China, especially from Britain and America. It's been one of the important subjects in our audiovisual translation studies to successfully translate the English film into Chinese so as to help the Chinese audience understand different values, ideology and life styles of foreign people by appreciating the film.Film is a kind of multi-media art transferring information with visual images and soundtracks. Thus, film translation with various distinctive features, compared with literary translation, is much more complicated. This thesis tries to adopt Jauss's Reception Theory and contextual theory as the theoretical basis to E-C film translation, analyze the constraints of subtitle translation and tentatively propose some principles that can be used to guide the practice of improving the quality of film translation in China. The high quality of film translation can help Chinese audience better understand the cultural connotation embodied in films.Film Subtitle translation is restricted by constraints of textual factors and formal factors, which are different from translation of other modes. The former refers to those given to subtitle translation by the visual quality of subtitles, and the latter consists of time and space. The formal factors play a crucial role in film translator's decisions. During the process of film translation, translator should take full consideration of the temporal and spatial constraints, and enable the target audience to obtain the most relevant information within the least time.
