As a kind of ideogram based on hieroglyph still in wide use today, Chinese characters are known as the greatest and the most successful design in human history. They reflect spiritual charms of the Chinese culture with aesthetic implication in the form of symbols. They are not only the cornerstone and quintessence of our traditional culture, but also the source of our national artistic form and design. The re-creation and application of Chinese characters is one of the most important research subjects of modern planar design.This thesis analyzes various respects of the shaping of Chinese characters, and explores into its application to modern planar design, based on principle issues such as the origin of shaping and development.Firstly, we begin with the origin of the shaping of Chinese characters and the development of all kinds of calligraphies. Two branches are dealt with here, including the mainstream calligraphy of the bureaucratic intellectuals and the non-mainstream calligraphy of the working people.
