News translation is different from general forms of translation from theperspective of communication studies. With the informative function, news translation attempts to render the contextual meaning of the original in the way that both content and language are easily comprehensible to the target readership, so as to achieve the desired communication effect. Considerable adaptations involving additions, deletions and reorganizations exist in the translation of news. In a strict sense, translation of this kind, seemingly a violation of the traditional translation criterion of "faithfulness", can be theoretically justified with functional equivalence theories. Based on some first-hand examples, this paper probes into the communication barriers in the process of news translation and tries to work out some workable strategies.
