On The Translator's Subjectivity In Dramatic Texts Translation

Drama is a fruit of human civilization and is a compounding art. As part of literature, this so-called "stage art" reflects social and cultural life from various angles by employing different measures, such as directing, performance, music and art design and so on. However, the history of dramatic texts translation is rather shorter than that of poetry and novels. Bulk of genre-based translation studies books relating to poetry and novels are easily found in the library while the materials involving dramatic texts translation are less. By applying the theory of translator's subjectivity into the discussion of dramatic texts translation, the thesis attempts to call more attention to the less explored and neglected area.This paper firstly briefly introduces the history and development of drama, as well as the studies of drama translation home and abroad and puts emphasis on the demonstration of the subjective role of the translator in the process of translating dramatic texts. Meanwhile, the paper also discusses the status of the translator before and after the "culture turn". Specifically, the translator has freedom in deciding the source text, applying translation strategies, interpreting and manipulating the source text. Therefore, it is necessary to note the roles of the translator in dramatic texts translation.Dramatic texts translation has seldom been explored from the perspective of the translator's subjectivity. Hopefully, this perspective will be helpful in the evaluating the dramatic texts translation.
