As a famous scholar in the earlier period of the Qing dynasty, Ye Xie was known for his criticism in poetry. His "Yuanshi" is regarded as one of the most important classical literary theory works for its system, theory and completeness. Many people carried out research into his poetic theory, but few on his literary compositions. This paper makes use of the previous researches, by the means of "comprehending somebody and his time", theory with practice, pointing out the basic features, position and influence of his poems and proses.At the part of introduction, the paper gives a brief introduction to the history and present situation of the research about Ye Xie, putting forward the purpose and means of the research. This paper is composed of four parts.Chapter one is about the life and works of Ye Xie. It mainly discusses the literary influence upon Ye Xie of the Family Ye in Wujiang in the later stage of the Ming Dynasty, and analyzes his official career, the reclusive life, the traveling and friendship in order to point out the life experiences of Ye Xie and the creation psychology.Chapter two is about his literary theory. There are three parts. The first part analyses his poetic theory based on "changes". Part two analyses his theory of proses emphasizing on the practicality. Part three is about his attitude towards "Ci", "Qu" and novels.Chapter three is about the contents and artistic features of his poems. The contents of his poems can be put into four categories: caring about the people and nation; the reclusive life; his friendship and traveling. There are also four artistic features of his poems: inheriting from Du Fu, Han Yu, Su Shi and advocating changes; being versatile; full of philosophy of the life; creating new poetic words.Chapter four is about the value and artistic features of his proses. His proses are emphasized on its practicality. There are five categories: historical critiques; critical comments on the social abuses; philosophic miscellanea for the life; epigraphs and biographies; introductions and postscripts. Practicability; having his own ideas; being logical; the precise and plain words are the four artistic features of his prose.The epilogue is mainly about the gains and losses of Ye Xie's literary compositions, and his position and influence in literature history.
