Perceptual Interference Effect is the finding that prior exposures to a more degraded stimulus inhibit its less degraded version's identification later. Prior study or priming is necessary for a word to produce Perceptual Interference Effect, on contrary, no study is required for a picture to produce the Perceptual Interference Effect. This fact is known as limited-set phenomenon. Moreover, viewing time of prior cues also influence the Perceptual Interference Effect.Using blurred Chinese characters, drawing on the technique of Gaussian Blur, and presenting Chinese characters from blurred to clear versions gradually, the present study try to find Perceptual Interference Effect in Chinese Characters' identification, investigate the effect of prior study and viewing time of prior cues on Chinese Characters' identification, and research whether the Chinese Characters' frequency, structure and stroke number influence the Perceptual Interference Effect.Experiment 1 examines the effects of prior study and frequency, experiment 2 examines the effects of prior study and structure, experiment 3 examines the effects of viewing time of prior blurred cues and stroke number, on the Perceptual Interference Effect in Chinese Characters' identification. The results show that:1. Besides in words and pictures' identification, there is also Perceptual Interference Effect in Chinese Characters' identification;2. The same as pictures, Chinese characters also are capable of high activation. Even Chinese characters with low frequency have Perceptual Interference Effect. So there maybe no limited-set phenomenon in Chinese Characters' identification. so, whether or not having been studied, Perception Interference Effect exists in Chinese Characters' identification.3. Though frequency and structure affect Chinese Characters' identification, they have no effect on Perceptual Interference Effect. Stroke number also have no effect on Perceptual Interference Effect.
