A Study On The Self-esteem Of The Students With Economic Disadvantage In The Two Colleges In Southwest China

The study ivestigated 1400 college students from Neijiang Teachers' College and Southwest Jiaotong University with the Scale of Self-worth for Young Students made by Huang Xiting and Yang Xiong . The study probes into the characteristics of the self-esteem of the 266 students with economic disadvantage and the 279 students without economic disadvantage in comparison . Then the study interviewed 6 students with economic disadvantage from Grad.2 to Grad.4 in Neijiang Teachers' College to find the factors that affect the self-esteem of the students with economic disadvantage.The results of the study are as follows:(1)The self-esteem of the college students with economic disadvantage is significantly lower than the national norm at SS1 and SS4 .(2)There exists a significant sex, grade, and school difference in the self-esteem of the college students with economic disadvantage . The self-esteem of the male college students with economic disadvantage is significantly higher than the female college students with economic disadvantage at T,SI2 and SS2 . The SS drops as the grade going up ; the SI2 of the students in Grad.l is significantly higher than that of the students in the other three grades ; the SI4 of the students in Grad.4 is significantly lower than that of the students in the other three grades . The SI3 of the students in Neijiang Teachers' College is significantly higher than that of the students in Southwest Jiaotong University. (3)There exists a significant difference between the college students with economic disadvantage and the college students without economic disadvantage. The T, SS, SI, S14, SS1, SS2 and SS4 of the college students with economic disadvantage are significantly lower than those of the college students without economic disadvantage. There's no difference in the self-esteem between the students with economic disadvantage and the students without economic disadvantage in Grad. 1; the T of the college students with economic disadvantage is significantly lower than that of the college students without economic disadvantage in Grad.2; the SS,S1,S14,SS1,SS2 and SS4 of the college students with economic disadvantage are significantly lower than those of the college students without economic disadvantage in Grad.3; the SS of the college students with economic disadvantage is significantly lower than that of the college studentswithout economic disadvantage in Grad.4.(4)The economic disadvantage of the family affects the self-esteem of the college students by physical health,outlookings,abilities and applauds from others and society. And the parents' believes of the cause of the family economic disadvantage also affect the self-esteem of the college students with economic disadvantage. Perhaps, the most important factors affect the self-esteem of the students with economic disadvantage are the concepts,the styles of analysing and the styles of coping of the college students with economic disadvantage.
