Most writers in the 1950s abandoned experimentalist novels and traced their favor back to realist writing style. As the first realistic novel of Kingsley Amis, a representative of the "Angry Young Men", Lucky Jim displays its distinctive enchantment in the literary circle. The uninhibited, helpless and slick figure of Jim Dixon has been set up as a symbol, who will exist in the unceasing conflicts of different times. The theory of duality is adopted in this thesis to analyze Jim's luck and anger. Firstly, the author offers a background to approach Kingsley Amis and his Lucky Jim. Then the second part focuses on revealing Jim's lucky pilgrimage with the appliance of the Motif of "Male Cinderella" followed by the disclosure of superficial and underlying reasons for Jim's luck. Jim's anger is announced in the third part through his amusing language, absurd behavior and rebellious psychology. Thus, Jim's anger is revealed as the truth concealed in his luck. Anger is lingering on Jim and hovering over the whole sky of Britain. The fourth part naturally combines the two previous chapters with the duality theory. For Jim, luck is superficiality and fortuity; yet, anger is truth and inevitability. With the open ending of Lucky Jim, Jim is certain to pour out his anger towards another stratum. The only means to shake off anger is introspection and self-improving through which one is able to base himself upon the fierce social competition. In this way, anger will first be fortuitous and then wither away. Immediately after this, luck will turn up and then become real and eventually turn out to be eternal. Finally, Lucky Jim is expected to enlighten some contemporary youths who are just ordinary and are lost in complaints.
