This dissertation aims at combing the traditional Chinese translation theory, analyzing its major characteristics in terms of thought patterns.This essay is composed of Introduction, Four Chapters and Conclusion. In the first chapter "A Brief Account of Chinese Translation History", the author divides Chinese translation history chronologically into four stages, which is: 1) The translation of Buddhist scriptures, 2) The translation of Western science and technology since 16th century, 3) The translation of Western literature and philosophy since 19th century, and 4) The translation since May 4th Movement. In the second chapter "A Brief Survey of the Development of Chinese Translation Theory", traditional Chinese translation theory (TCTT) can be separated into four stages based on the objective rule in the development of things, namely, 1) Translation theory in its beginning stage from late Han to early Tang Dynasty, 2) Translation theory in its development stage from the late 19th century to early 20th century, 3) Translation theory in its maturing stage from the early 20th century to middle 20th century, and 4) Translation theory in its transferring stage since 1951. In this division and description, the author also analyzes the main arguments held on by those whose arguments are most immediately relevant to the discussion --Chinese translation theory from the perspective of thought patterns. The former two chapters work as a matting role for the further discussion in Chapter Three and Chapter Four.
