A Study Of The Usage Of Traditional Elements In Chinese Modern Packing Design

Chinese traditional culture provides our packing designers with infinite materials and vast source of innovative ideas. In recent years, most of the packing designs, which were awarded with renowned prizes in both national and international competitions, benefited a lot from the use of traditional elements. However, it is of great importance to Chinese modern packing design as to what elements should be classified into traditional category. This essay tends to analyze the appliance of Chinese traditional elements in Chinese modern packing design from the following five aspects.Firstly, the traditional aesthetic philosophy. The idea that"the unity of exterior and interior"requires that packing design should combine external form with internal function. Another traditional philosophical viewpoint thinks that man and universe are in one unity. It stresses the coexistence of human and other life forms on earth, and also the harmony between human and the nature as a whole, which is in accordance with the idea of environmental protestation packing. The third notion, known as the combination of the abstract and the concrete, means designers should be extremely cautious and careful in dealing with packing design. All these three traditional philosophical ideas, to some extent, can be considered as guidance to our modern packing design.Secondly, the materials. Generally speaking, the natural materials and the artificially–possessed natural materials all originate from the nature. They are all in conformity with the environmental protection standard, thus can enhance the cultural value of certain products. Those packing design using the simulation of traditional materials are also characterized with unique national traits and modern sense.Thirdly,traditional design. Those container, featured with a sense of completeness and grandeur, such as pots and jars, together with those traditional graphics with special implication, all can be referred to and studied by modern packing designers.
