Translation unit, as the basic unit of understanding and operation in the process of translation, determines the quality of the translation text. Thus, no matter in the practice of translation or in translation theory research, the discussion of translation, unit is of great necessity. The study on the unit of translation is indispensable in the construction of translatology, and it is also important to translation theory, translation practice and translation criticism as well. On the other hand, as the center of translation, the translator, not only the subject but also the hinge of the whole process of translation, not only the reader of the original text but also the writer of the target text, is of important position. As the position of translator was ignored in the history of translation, for a Jong time, the author looks into this problem and discusses the choice and usage of translation unit from the respect of subjectivity of translator.There are totally six parts including the introduction, four chapters and the conclusions in this thesis. The section of introduction gives the significance and possibility of the topic of the thesis, and the objective and the methods as well. In the first chapter, the author gives a brief introduction of the translation unit and the history review of the study on it, which is divided into two parts. The first part is the study abroad while the following part is about the study in China. The achievements and the inadequacy of these studies are discussed in this chapter. In the second chapter, the author introduces the concept of subjectivity of translator and its development in both home and abroad. The translation process involves the author, the original text, the source reader, the translator, the target text and the target reader. However, traditional translation studies have long neglected the important role of the translator. With by the "cultural turn" in translation studies, the subjective role of translator in the translating process becomes more and more obvious. The subjective role of the translator becomes one of the major topics in translation studies.
