With more and more cultural exchanges in the world, translation plays a more significant role than ever. From the perspective of cultural communication, this thesis analyzes the close relationship between language and culture as well as the cause of cultural differences, pointing out that the loss of cultural information is unavoidable in translating. Therefore, cultural translatability can only be a question of limit, viz. how to retain the SL cultural message in the process of translating as much as possible. This author also analyzes the cause of cultural loss and attempts to find a solution, which will be of great theoretical and practical significance in translation improvement and cross-cultural communication. Some famous translation theories are discussed and personal opinions on the essence of translation are offered. Then, on the basis of three translated versions of Fu Shen Lin Ji, the author makes an analysis of and some comments on the translated texts from cultural perspective. By comparing the three English versions, the author explains how the translators effectively transmit the cultural message according to their purposes of translation and how they deal with the culture-loaded words so as to find the corresponding strategies and techniques to compensate the cultural loss in translating. In the three versions, the instructive theories and practical translation skills the translators have shown not only provide useful reference for us but set us a good example for further cultural translation. Finally, the author points out that the existence of cultural difference is objective, the loss of culture unavoidable and the limit of translatability not static but dynamic. With more and more cultural exchanges between China and western countries, the degree of translatability will be bound to increase gradually.
