Striving For Translation Equivalence

As a fundamental problem in the translation theories, translation equivalence has mainly been studied from five approaches, namely, the linguistic approach, the communicative approach, the sociosemiotic approach, translatological approach and literary approach, In recent years, the study focus is on the communicative approach represented by Eugene Nida and Peter Newmark and the translatological approach by Lefevere and Bassnett. Actually, the equivalence from macro-cultural perspective by the latter holds no contradiction to that from serving the communicative purpose by the former. Instead, they share in many ways the sameness, because seeking cultural equivalence also serves the purpose of communication.The thesis takes as the theoretical foundation the principles of Nida, Newmark and those of the school of translation studies, and bases on such properties of culture as multi-layered, national, regional, successive and changeable for analyzing some cultural problems in translation.
