Deep studies on Buddhist statues of the Southern Dynasties in Chengdu area have been made in recent years. Many of them focus on the style and the origin up till now. Although some kinds of specific form of the statues have been concerned, the research on unique Jiyue image hasn't been done practically. This paper tries to draw a general picture of the stone-carved Jiyue flying apsaras and the Jiyue performers in Chengdu area by using the images as a breaking point. It also compares these images in Chengdu with those in other area at that time, finds out the similarities and the differences between them, and tracks down the origin of the Jiyue image. Through such work, the author hopes that the impression of the whole situation of Chengdu carved stone during Southern Dynasties can be given clearly, and the investigation on the communication of Buddhist art between Chengdu, Nanjin and the central plain area can be made more deeply.From the perspective of art archaeology and iconology, the paper lists and classifies the Jiyue images from Chengdu and other areas. It also analyses different kinds of the instruments and the content of the Music and Dance with the methods of music archaeology and music iconology. At last, the paper draws a conclusion on the origin of the images and the communication of the status with historical documents.The paper contains four parts: In part I the author summarizes the research progress on the Chengdu stone carvings in the Southern Dynasties, as well as the purpose and the methods of the research.
