As a small-scale study, this study was designed to investigate some disadvantages and problems in college listening teaching and learning with the purpose of providing some suggestions for further reform. In particular, by means of questionnaire survey, the study was carried out to examine the college students'listening proficiency, the context of listening teaching and learning in universities of China.With the help of the quantitative methodology, the data in this study was collected from college students who are from an ordinary university in China. The instrument, a questionnaire survey, was developed specifically for the study and the questionnaire was completed by means of group administration. The results of the study were analysed in detail with the help of tables and bar graphs.More specifically, the study is composed of five chapters. Chapter one is the introduction, including motives for the study and structure of the dissertation. Chapter two contains some background information concerning ELT in primary schools and high schools of China as well as in colleges and universities of China. Chapter three reviews the literature related to the study. Chapter four focuses on the study in detail, including the design and process of the questionnaire, the analysis and discussion of findings. Chapter five offers some suggestions on listening teaching and learning reform in universities of China, based on the results of the study as well as relevant theories. Some key issues are summarized and the proposals for listening reaching reform are analyzed, especially about using communicative approach and learner-centred instruction, listening-awareness training, listening skill and strategy training, proposed teaching models. Chapter six, which focuses on limitations and further recommendations, summarizes the problems encountered in the study and offers some suggestions for further research.The analysis of the data confirms that there exist some disadvantages and problems in current listening teaching and learning in universities of China and it is necessary to explore all possible methods for improvements. The proposals provided here hope to contribute to current listening teaching reform.
